fun fact friday: hunger games edition

**if you havent read the books or seen the movie, do not read any further. youve been warned**

1. i read the trilogy in record time (for me... which maybe means two weeks. i read slow).

2. wednesday night i finished book #1, for the second time. its been awhile since ive re-read a book. (others include, but are not limited to: i know this much is true, brave new world, to kill a mockingbird)

3. i was, and still am, team peeta. book version more so than movie. gale is freakin hot.

4. yesterday was the first time i have been to the movies by myself.

5. it was also the first time i have seen a movie in imax. wow. i wish i had seen batman: the dark knight in imax.

6. about 20 minutes into the movie i moved to the very back row of the theater (there were about 15 people there). i couldnt handle the shakyness closer up with such a big screen.

7. the filming technique was choppy & poor. many reviews seem to agree.

8. i dont think ive ever seen a movie that so fully/accurately captures a book, maintaining plot, sub plots, and characters, as hunger games does. sure there were minor differences (they had to change a few things due to katniss being the narrator in the book and making sure the descriptions were fulfilled) but overall i felt they did a great job. for a pg13 movie.

9. im not sure i would have enjoyed the movie if it was rated R.

10. the movie totally failed at presenting the tributes at the capital before the games. fail fail fail.

11. did i mention the filming was terrible?

12. during the scene when the tributes are taken to the games on the pedestals, the theater i was in kinda went blurry, like it was supposed to be in 3D or something. this lasted about 10 minutes, max. i felt that was a pretty important part in the book, but i couldnt really tell if the movie depicted it quite the same way (book: katniss gets distracted by peeta and misses her chance to run for the center). when we walked out of the theater we were handed a rain check for another imax movie due to the "technical difficulties". cool.

13. i felt like before i knew it peeta and katniss were in the cave and the movie was close to the end. although the movie was 2 plus hours long, i felt slightly unsatisfied.

14. overall i think gary ross did an excellent job of bringing the hunger games to the big screen, but i still recommend the book over the movie, as always. (i dont think i would have liked the movie if i had not read the book first). the movie just wasnt enough. and i hope that if people only see the movie and say they didnt like it, that they give the book a shot. it will maybe take you a day or two to read it.

15. despite my own mental picture of haymitch being more like hagrid (and thats probably only because i am also reading harry potter), woody harrelson was an excellent choice for his character. lenny kravitz too.

16. i thought gale's character sucked at acting.

17. im pretty sure jennifer lawrence will soon be in playboy.

18. i wouldnt let my 10 year old read this. ya know, if i had a 10 year old.

19. i felt like the true & total control of the capital over the games was much more pronounced in the movie than in the book.

20. when does "catching fire" come out?

whether you read the book, see the movie, or both....
may the odds be ever in your favor :)

dear monday

dear hunger games,
ive heard mixed reviews and now im nervous. thursday is the big day. please dont disappoint.

dear pete pfitzinger,
for 2 years ive attempted your 18/55 plan in the summer/fall. not so good. were giving it another shot, starting with yesterdays lactate threshold run. 8 miles, with 4 @ half marathon race pace (8:13). and todays a rest day! look at that, so far so good. (side note: im kinda sorta cheating on you with a slight addition/modification of mcmillian. you have to know im probably not the only person to do this.
im sure youll get over it)

dear spring cleaning,
i have finally allowed myself to get rid of things that have cluttered my mind and my life for too long now. the weight/space that it all took up (both physically and emotionally) now feels open and free. and it feels really, really good.

dear sarah,
thank you for one of the best long runs i have had in FOREVER.
"it probably isnt the first time and it definitely wont be the last."

dear last weeks warm weather,
please return sooner rather than later. k thanks.

dear tri training,
i promise to try and get back in the pool this week. it wasnt my fault that the pool was closed last week when i tried to go! (it was my fault that i didnt return back the following morning, but we wont talk about that for now). swim/bike/run brick coming up this week...

dear monday,
i think i need a break... deep breath...

big brother

someday i will be on this show. someday being the key word. im too old for the real world (thank.God). i would have hated road rules (does that show even exist anymore?) i would last all of 20 minutes on survivor. amazing race.... maybe.

but big brother, im coming for you. (and im SO glad i didnt send in my application for last season...)

i would have been kicked off for attempted murder

i do realize my chances of being on the show are slim. my original plan was to really play up the whole "im from MAINE! waaaay up by canada, do you even know where maine is? no one from maine has ever been on a reality show, so clearly you need to see how awesome i am!". then julie dated survivor host jeff after the show. then bob freaking won survivor. then adam was on the real world (he really made maine look cool... not). then ashley was on survivor. then another ashley was on the bachelorette. thanks for blowing it for me, guys. but i think they would see that im still pretty cool, right?

bob

ashley

adam

ashley

so anyway... i probably have no intention to ever send in my application or make the 2 minute video, but i figured i would fill it out anyway and file it away for a rainy day when maybe, just maybe, i get some real guts (note: thats not today). the application is 13 pages long and pretty much asks you to share your deepest darkest secrets so they can make sure to expose you on national television. so thats cool. oh yeah, this show has video cameras watching you 24/7... thats what you sign up for. my bad.

eligibility instructions # 4: the house is extensively outfitted with video and audio recording devices which will record, broadcast and exhibit your actions and voice at all times, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in every room of the house for the duration of your participation in the contest. you will be observed at all times by the producers as well as the general public watching on tv, the internet, mobile devices, and any and all other media.

   ...just incase you were unsure...

so even if i did get chosen as just a semi-finalist, id have to pay my way to wherever they decide they can meet me... if i got to the finals id have to get myself to LA... and then if im really picked for the show (eeeek!), id have to pretty much quit my job (assuming im there for the whole summer, cuz come on... duh). im sure my job would be held for me though, right?

  ha.

season 11
would have been alright... jordan and jeff were clearly the best part

season 12
LOVED season 12. but my girl annie went home waaaay too soon.
(and i still wish lane and britney would hook up. yes i still think about these things)

season 13
didnt care for it at first, but it got better

so, the application. because its ridiculous, ill spare you all the boring stuff (name, address, contact info, weight... really?) and give you some of the fun ones.

-name, phone number, and address of your Best Friend: uh oh, they mean business...

-if you are married or in a relationship, how would you rate your relationship on a scale of 1-10 (1 being worst, 10 being best)? please explain....
-if you are married or in a relationship, how will your partner feel about the potential 3 month separation? i generally have to force him to watch but then he gets hooked... im assuming he would watch the show (maybe?), but he would probably go through a few more bottles of crown than during other seasons (he would also probably welcome the 3 month vacation hehe). (*side note: we've already discussed ways to send secret notes in the packages he will send when im head of household)

-are you a professional performer within the entertainment industry? if so, what do you do? hahahaha. yes that is really a question. and no, i am not.

-do you have any acting, singing, or performing aspirations? if so, tell us your wishes and goals. i sing in the car all the time and pretend im the next american idol.

-have you ever appeared in any television programs or films or movies or commercials or advertisements of any kind? one time when i was in los angeles we were part of a tv show in a supermarket parking lot. it was a show where people have these strange habits... the one they were filming was about a kid who works at the store who thought he was a professional wrestler and he would wrestle grocery carts. i cant make this up.

-are there any nude or other revealing or compromising images of you that are available publicly either through the internet, video, or otherwise? if so, please describe and explain. you mean you arent asking to see it? i mean... no, i hope not...

...so then they get even more fun...

-regardless of your marital status, describe your ideal romantic partner ...wow, just wow...

-describe your relationship with your mother and father ...is there a page limit to these answers?

-what is your favorite food? (i would tell them I LOVE PICKLES OMG SO GOOD just so that i wouldnt be stuck eating them if they found out i hated them. id starve first).

-do you drink alcohol? if so, how often do you drink and how much? if you drink, how often do you get drunk? how do you act when you get drunk? haha, i drink a little bit.... and i get more awesome, duh.

-do you have any food allergies? yup, pickles.

-whats your favorite color? interesting... ? maybe they want to know what ill like to wear for the unitard (God only knows id be the one wearing that damn thing)

-have you ever sought mental health counseling in any form? are they sure they really looked into rachels past before allowing her on the show?? just curious...

-please list any allergies you have and your current treatment for them (if any). just pickles. i dont eat them, that solves it.

...and heres where they get the good stuff so they know how to push you and get good ratings...

-do you have a temper? how often do you lose your temper? what provokes you? how do you deal with anger? how do you deal with someone who intimidates you? when was the last time you hit, punched, kicked, or threw something in anger? please provide details. (those are all separate questions... but really? i can get mad when people piss me off, which im sure will happen a lot in the house, but im not gonna flip out, which probably makes me less of a candidate. so id have to make something up haha. clearly i would not be the person they chose)

-what are you afraid of? spiders and snakes (they will be sure to have those on my show)

...and the "get creative" part...

-list three adjectives that best describe you: smart, hot, awesome. obvs.

-if you could hold any political office, what would it be? can i just be the professional political photographer?

-what is the accomplishment you are most proud of? well just this morning i managed to turn our white bath mat pink (washed it with never before washed red curtains) and then i successfully bleached the bath mat back to white. id say thats pretty huge for me.

-what are you most ashamed of, either now or in your past? whatever i would put here is for sure gonna get broadcast on tv

-list three items you would take with you into the big brother house if allowed and why- my camera, secret snacks (incase im on slop or restricted to eating only pickles), my nalgene bottle

-have you ever been to a nude beach? if so what was it like? uh negative. im gonna assume theyre pretty sweet, especially the one jennifer anniston would be at. unless its in maine or canada.

-what would you do if big brother made you famous? whatever i wanted to do, id be famous! (im sure theyre looking for an answer like "heroin" or something. but no, i wouldnt do that.)

-what types of people would you choose to have living with you in the big brother house? (clearly whatever i write here they would put in the opposite. i know how this works, so...) please bring people like rachel and brendon, omg i love them soooooo much. and jessie, he was sooooo great and awesome and wonderful (b.a.r.f)

-what types of people would you NOT chose to live with you in the house? please dont have people jordan or britney, they sucked. jeff too, he was terrible to look at. i cant stand to live with people who are good looking and awesome. i need to be the best one there. *wink wink*

-what would irritate you about living in a house with about a dozen other people? everything, thats why i would make the show awesome.

-what do you think would be the most difficult part of living in the house? successfully getting further in the show due to a fake showmance, obviously.

-do you have a strategy for winning big brother? its top secret. actually, dont get kicked off, theres my strategy.

...then theres a THREE page waiver. three.pages. in bold CAPITAL LETTERS. they dont mess around. i think theyre pretty much asking for your first born. i havent actually read through it.

despite the fact ill never even send the application in, id be so terrible on this show, haha. and i would have no idea what to say in the diary room or when if i was on the block. (fun fact: sometimes ill call downstairs to tyler and go "tyler, please report to the diary room". danielle = huge loser. i really do have a sick obsession with this show. dont tell me you dont too). and i can barely remember what happened yesterday, let alone when they ask you all those questions for HOH competitions- "how many eyelashes fell out on the day that the 3rd houseguest went to the bathroom"... seriously. lets also not forget that i wouldnt have hot flashy dresses to wear. if im gonna be stuck in a house/backyard for 3 months, im bringing my bikini, workout clothes, and hoodies/sweatpants.

clearly id be the best houseguest ever. ill let you know when my season airs.

fun fact friday: sewing edition

a few weeks ago i bought a sewing machine. do i know how to sew? nope. am i willing to learn so in the future i can make sweet things for family and friends? of course!

isnt she pretty?
*name yet to be determined... any suggestions?

i had about a 10 minute tutorial from my friend rachel, and i was able to put three pieces of fabric together and called it a cell phone placemat. you all should be so jealous i know how to make those little gems... and many of you may find some in your holiday stockings this year! horray! (now taking orders....)

after the big purchase, i also knew i needed some supplies. i was shocked (and slightly overwhelmed) at just how much stuff was out there, and since im still new at this, i just went with some of the basics.
fancy fabric scissors, a tupperware instead of a sewing box, a cute pin cushion, pins, fabric, a ruler, and some batting. that should be good.

one of the first things to do was prepare my machine with the bobbin...
not quite what the tutorial video looked like...

second attempt (top) went better
(still not sure what happened with the first attempt)

i had decided not to get a cutting board or a rotary cutter (expensive!). i figured my fancy fabric scissors would do just fine.

chips wanted to help

i also figured i could just figure out a pattern of my own. who needs a sewing book?!
yes, the beer is necessary.

the plan.

after attempting to cut the squares and seeing not so straight lines, i went back to the store. (dont blame this on the beer).

trust me, theres a reason these things are made.

once all the squares were cut (and the ones i previously cut were re-cut with the rotary cutter) the real fun began. and one of my pieces ended up like this:

side note: not supposed to look like that... but its underneath, so no one will ever know!
(also, i dont know why thats happening. i adjusted the tension and everything... )

things went well for a few minutes, then this happened:
so.much.string.
(incase you are a newcomer to this whole sewing thing too, that means somethings not right)

wtf?

i eventually got the first few pieces put together (after taking the machine apart a zillion times).

and the blanket started coming together nicely...
just dont look underneath!

sadly, there is a mistake on the front... good thing the recipient of the blanket will never be aware of this little teeny tiny mistake (this probably wouldnt happen if i had an actual plan to work off of... maybe next time)

laying the blanket out to iron it, chips already has decided she loves her new blanket...

yes. the blanket is for the cat. judge free zone here people!

now comes the hard part... the blanket sandwich! mmmm sandwiches. the batting that i got is rather hard to work with (its SO FLUFFY!). im in love with the back pattern i used, obvs. and chips loves zebra print too!

so now im stuck. ive pinned the three layers together and im supposed to be able to sew them all together with fancy swirls on the sewing machine. yeah, i dont know how to do that. so im kinda scared to continue. ive watched tutorials on how to bind the edges too, so maybe ill do that first....

to be continued....

baby got track?

id say yesterday mornings workout with sarah was more like baby lack track. or baby wanna smack track.
the original 4:30am track workout goal was:

7 mile heart rate run
.5 mile warm up
1 mile at 140
.25 cool down*
1 mile at 150
.25 cool down
1 mile at 160
.25 cool down
1 mile at 170
.25 cool down
1 mile at 180
.5 mile cool down

*cool down after a 11 min mile makes me laugh

(ok i lied... original original track plan was 800s. im refusing to do those until further notice, and sarah gave them up for lent.)

so anyway... 2nd original plan:

  fail.

couldnt keep my hr at 140... its not as easy as you think,
even with a resting rate of 48

original goal turned into second goal:
b. run 6 miles

sweet negative splits though

ohhhh look at that:

fail.
(*side note: i had to go to work, which meant needing to go home and shower ((only for the sake of my coworkers and patients... we all know i would sit at home til at least noon)) so that meant having to leave the track by 5:30. i looked at my watch around mile 4 and it read 5:18. i told sarah "alright, we have time for 2 more miles. yeah.. if we were kenyan maybe. math: fail).

final result:
c. run 5.6 boring miles, alternate directions every few laps, add in some 100 yard strides, and complain every other sentence....

success!

(slight exaggeration... maybe)

are we running or swimming?

we decided a few things:

1. still love 4:30am (despite putting on all workout clothes and getting back into bed while texting the other person to see if they still want to go.... this happens more often than not)
2. track would be better if it were not .25 miles around
3. turning around and going in the other direction does not make track any less boring
4. neither of us are good at math when running (7.5 laps does not equal 3 miles)
5. the track might be more fun if we recruited more runners to join us

so who wants to join us next time??

Sunday, March 11, 2012

so i lied...

...or maybe just changed my mind. either way... remember that post a few months ago where i was all "oh who cares about another marathon, ive done 5, who needs to do more... blah blah blah...." (actually it was more like "i hate running. i want a break... waaaaah waaaaaah waaaaaaaaaaaaah"...)

since that post, the number of times ive gone back and forth about the decision to run a marathon was ridiculous driving me crazy. id find one i wanted to run, go to the site, get out the credit card, and change my mind. (this happened at least 8 times). i kept going back to some of the reasons why i decided not to do a marathon this year... but the more i thought about it, the more i realized i really do enjoy running the races, even when the training gets tough (both mentally and physically). im pretty sure ive never actually completed an entire "training program" for any of the 5 marathons ive done (lets get real... have you? ok, its probably just me....) regardless, ive still crossed each finish line, with a smile on my face.

maybe its just the talk of everyone around me training for boston or excited for their spring/fall marathon (or the desire for an ice bath.... wait, uh, what?)... but i started longing for the training, remembering the thrill of finishing the distance (yes, us marathon runners have sick minds... we actually enjoy this pain?!), ready to try to tackle the marathon once again.

so on thursday, while everyone was awaiting 3pm to register for the marine corps marathon, i finally followed through and did a little registering myself:

(26.2 hours?! i hope they know im only running 26.2 miles...
and i also hope it wont take me 26.2 hours to do so)

(theres a marathon, a 12 hour ultra, and a 24 hour ultra)

and i just may have gotten a little carried away with this whole "i want to do a marathon" thing... cuz i did this too:

i mean, i AM on their website and all...

i havent completely sold myself on a particular training program just yet, but im leaning towards a slight modification of the pfitz 18/55 program again, (the one that i ultimately failed at last summer for the maine marathon). i didnt fail cuz of the training program itself... just lots and lots of life got in the way. i feel much stronger and a whole lot faster than last year, and i think training in the spring/early summer will be more feasable than summer/fall training (read: dear mother nature, please no heat stroke this year, kthanks). ive thought about 16/14/12 week plans, but i like the layout of the 18 week plan (despite feeling like 18 weeks is a really loooooooooong time).

im focusing on the around the lake marathon as my goal race vs. mdi, but i couldnt pass up mdi after how beautiful it was last year (seriously, do this race!!). my work schedule doesnt always allow me to do my "long runs" on saturday or sunday, so as always i have to tweak the training program to fit. also, around the lake starts at 7pm on a friday night so my weeks can be saturday to friday instead of monday to sunday. im gonna need to figure out nutrition & fuel in a different way as well since ill be awake all day before the race.

sarah and i talked a lot during our 13 mile run today and came up with some great plans for training. im going to try doing some of my runs at night, and since my towns kinda sketchy, ill stick to running in my neighborhood (this is what i do when i run at 4am, our neighborhood is a 1 mile figure 8). this will also help get me used to the boring monotony (the marathon is a 3.17 mile loop... 8 times. sounds fun right??) and im not sure but im assuming since its at night i wont be able to wear music, so that will be a big change. the last two long runs i went without, but i had someone to talk to... so, the big question remains: who's coming to run with me? :)

needless to say im happy with my choice, and im excited to see what i can do with (hopefully) adequate/strong training. as my training progresses ill figure out my goals (although a few people already know one of them). might the loop race get boring? sure. but i know some friends who are going to be there for the ultra's and im hoping to have a few friends hanging out cheering me on every 3 miles (pretty please? ill buy you ice cream or beer! peeeeer pressure!)

and really, who doesnt love running with a headlamp?

february recap

february

runs/miles: 12 runs/69.32 miles
bike miles: 99 miles
swimming: 3 swims this month, 2.5 miles total
races: 3 (kinda)-
mid winter classic 10 miler (ran on my own)- 1:19:12 (7:55 pace) 10 mile PR
polar bear 5k- 22:59 (7:24 pace) 2nd in age group
hyannis half marathon- 1:48:45 (8:13 pace) half marathon PR

# of half marathon PRs: ONE! :) (see above)
# of times i fell over in pain cuz of a massive calf seizure (is that even a thing?): 1. and it sucked.
# of times ive gone back and forth about running a marathon (again): 4 (getting better)
# of times ive almost pressed submit on a marathon registration page: 0 (down from 2 last month)

favorite run: mid winter classic... its a tough course but it was a beautiful day and despite feeling rather puke-tastic towards mile 7, i was glad i got out to run it since i couldnt make the actual race (its tough without your fellow runner buddies around sometimes)
least favorite run: the 10x800s on the treadmill (at 4:30am). wowza, those things were craaaazy. but ill probably do it again. were slightly stupid like that.
favorite pin: (yes, im still slightly obsessed... favorites tied for two...)

id probably say the latter

hahahahaha
goals from february:
 - ride more miles than feb 2011 (45 miles): got up to 99 this month! id say thats more than i expected, but of course when i added it all up i was pissed to see that i could have just gone one more mile...
 - 525m swim in 11 minutes (current time: 11:20): got down to 10:20, took a whole minute off!!
 - plank a day: i successfully completed this (some days were better than others)... within the first week of the month i did a plank a day in 6 different states: maine, new hampshire, massachusetts, pennsylvania, missouri, and illinois, and one 30,000 feet in the air (we practically had the entire airplane to ourselves on superbowl sunday). i tried to remember to do the plank when i woke up in the morning but that rarely worked out, so id be laying in bed and remember. one plank i did in my bed cuz i literally was too lazy to get up. but alas, i completed it.

march goals:
 - 100 bike miles
 - run the tough 12 miler again that i did a few weeks ago (it wasnt that bad...)
 - 800s on the track. like outside. headlamps optional. (sarah youre not getting out of this one)
 - go to reds now that its open (thank you to my brother for texting me last night with this info)
 - make monkey bread (and try not to eat it all)
 - figure out proper fuel & hydration so as not to crash in april at great bay
 - less. coffee.

ok, enough of that. and no more of this "you need to do something every day thing" (other than this, cuz its my resolution and all... which i already have difficulties keeping up with).

and because i skipped "fun fact friday" yesterday, here are a few just for fun:
1. i have this great fear that one day im going to lift the toilet seat or open the washing machine and a huge snake will be coiled to in there. im not even sure there are huge snakes like that where we live but it still worries me.
2. ill fully admit it (for meg)... im making a quilt for my cat. trust me, no one else will want this thing (my first quilting attempt), and she will truly appreciate it.
3. the square root of 127521 is 357.1... clearly you all would be lost without that info. (thanks john and clint for this lovely information!)
4. we now have 6 bottles of pinnacle vodka in my house after yesterdays addition of cookie dough. yes, you read that right. cookie.dough.VODKA.
5. yesterday while roaming around rite aid i tried out a color of nail polish that i must have. only my thumb is painted (clearly i needed to try it out first) and i have yet to take it off. but i refuse to spend $8, so im waiting for a coupon.
the color matches my watch!
(essie: turquoise & caicos)
